I don't want to go there because there is nothing to see, the people are miserable, the country is backward and nobody speaks English.

 Riga, the capital of Latvia, is more well-known these days for its marauding drunken visitors from countries such as the UK. For those that want to learn more, however, Latvia has a rich and varied history to discover. Go, for instance, to Rundale Palace and you can easily imagine you are in Versailles or in one of the great palaces in Potsdam.

There is plenty to see from the myriad art nouveau buildings in Riga, the fantastic old towns in Vilnius and Tallinn and some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. Best of all, for visitors from the UK, is the feeling of space! Yes, there is still a lot to be done to reach "Western" standards but the tourism industry in the Baltics is young and dynamic and English is widely spoken. (Why not meet the locals half way and learn a few expressions in their language?)

Estonia away from its capital, Tallinn and a world away from the hectic pace of life in Western European cities...but, of course, none the worse for that!

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has the largest Old Town in Eastern Europe. It is a World Heritage site. The capital is benefiting from a lot of inward investment and the country's road infrastructure is good - rail travel has been negelcted, though.
